When Do You Have to Repair Your Windshield?
While the law varies from state to state, a good rule of thumb is that you should repair your windshield when a crack exceeding a quarter of an inch wide appears or if it intersects with another crack. These cracks are generally quickly repairable and will save you the trouble of replacing the entire windshield - which is more costly and takes more time.
How Dangerous is it to Drive with a Small Crack?
While a small crack is not inherently unsafe, driving with a crack in your windshield is never a good idea. Over time it will get wider and longer, and it poses a hazard to yourself, other passengers in the car, and other drivers in the event of an unavoidable collision. While we're hoping that never happens, it's always safer to simply repair the crack as soon as possible.
How Big of a Crack on a Windshield is Unfixable?
Chips larger than a quarter and cracks longer than 3.5 inches are generally considered unrepairable, but there are exceptions. That goes both ways - sometimes cracks and chips smaller than that may be too deep to repair, and sometimes larger cracks and chips are shallow enough to repair and don't demand an entirely new windshield.
